Introduction

Welcome to Footnote! We are very excited you are here. This document will introduce Footnote and explain how our software is organized. We have other documentations that provide more details, such as:

  • How to Create, Edit, and Manage Your Museums, Collections, and Artifacts

  • How to Manage Your Footnote Account

This document will orient you to help you get started.

Museums, Collections, and Artifacts

Footnote is organized into Museums, Collections, and Artifacts and it is crucial to understand this hierarchy. Most accounts will only manage one museum, but you can add more museums to your account if you manage multiple museums. Each museum can have multiple collections, and each collection can have multiple artifacts. The number of artifacts you can add is determined by the plan to which you are subscribed.

When you sign up, we ask you for the name of your organization. This name serves as the name for your first museum when you first log in. This museum name, along with other attributes like images, description, hours of operation, address, ticketing, etc., can all be edited and updated by selecting “Edit museum page.”

Once you have created your first museum, you will need to add a collection by either clicking the “Create New” collection button or clicking the “Add new collection” button on your museum dashboard. You can add content like images and a description to your collections. Collections can be organized however you see fit for your visitors. Some museums are already organized by collection. Other museums organize Footnote collections according to their museum’s physical layout (e.g., First Floor Collection, Blue Room Collection, Main Room Collection, etc.).

After a collection is created, you can add your artifacts to your collection. Images and a description can be added to each artifact.

All museums, collections, and artifacts will have a unique QR code. You can print these QR codes and place them within your physical museum. As the QR codes are scanned within the Footnote app, your visitors can view the detail page for that museum, collection, or artifacts.

There is no limit to the number of images or length of descriptions that you can add to your museums, collections, and artifacts. So, we encourage you to use the endless space by adding as much content as you see fit to enhance your visitors’ experience. Other media types, such as audio, do have limits based on your plan, but you won't be able to add more than your cap allows. So don’t fear that you will go over your cap.
